Oh OK so it needs to be calculated. I thought there was an obs product for that.

well, spreadsheets notes says
hfds (surface_downward_heat_flux_in_sea_water; W m-2; ocean; mon) can be used for 'variable2' Observational reference is not clear for net surface heat flux, it is recommended to use several datasets
but i was calculating for model, so not sure if a single obs variable can be used

I have downloaded COBE2, OAFLUX and DEEP-C in /g/data/kj13.
Working on CFSR too.
We are going to need some ESMValTool CMORisers....
