regional mom6 recipe needs access to a specific user's directory to run FRE tool step #477
Comments
Sure. When we figure out a better solution we can open a PR. Good suggestions. I have no strong opinion. Others? |
Yeah it's a tricky one! I guess we've written in the "getting started" section in the README that users need to have these tools installed before using the package. For the ACCESS-OM2 example, rather than leaving the path to the FRE tools blank for users to fill it in, we left Angus' path just in case the user had the right access (which in this case is to g40 I think). I'd be happy to copy the tools to ik11, or somewhere else that's more for generic data storage if the maintainers of these projects were happy with that leaving them there long term! @navidcy would know more about that than me and who to ask |
Yes copy to ik11! I’m happy with it. (I don’t know if I’m a maintainer but Imm happy!) They are probably miniscule anyway? Anything leas than 10Gb is miniscule.. please ensure the read right permission shenanigans are ok — I always mess that up 🫣 |
And let’s update the example to point to that directory? |
Yes definitely! Yeah space is miniscule, just the clutter of having random stuff in there that they're not allowed to move around. But I agree, should be fine |
Say I wanted to compile this myself. Do we point the user to the instructions to do so? |
GFDL's FREtools repo is linked in the readme, in the getting started section I linked above. The readme doc on their repo contains the install instructions |
Let us know when you copy this somewhere else @ashjbarnes. |
@angus-g any chance you could copy these tools to ik11? Unless there is a particular downside to not compiling them myself. @PaulSpence also looking to run this and stuck at the same step |
I think ACCESS-NRI will provide these tools soon, if not already, as part of their Spack packages. See e.g. ACCESS-NRI/spack-packages#143 |
But "will" implies sometime in the future. Let's copy it to somewhere for @mmr0 now until ACCESS-NRI? It can be anywhere... even in their home directory? |
Resolves #477 by copying these tools to ik11, a repo that users need to have access to anyway for the forcing data
Copied to |
This was brought up in #475 but is buried there
Step 6 in Recipes/regional-mom6-forced-by-access-om2.ipynb # requires access to @angus-g home directory
No PR from me because I'm not sure the preferred way to solve this @angus-g @ashjbarnes @navidcy. Perhaps these complied tools should live somewhere else? Or the user could compile them themselves in which case we could update the recipe instructions
