Up the Ante

In our current system, we have the potential to introduce more complexity, but it will be important to make sure the core system maintains a simplicity and elegance to make it easier for GMs and players to learn the fundamentals and build from there.

My proposal is to add a new section of modifications to epic events that can be treated as optional rules for GMs to add in to epic events to make them more challenging/tense/interesting as best suits the moment they are trying to draw out.

The Up the Ante section would include ways to make the epic event more challenging like preventing players from attempting more than one check total, or making a failure count towards a different measure than just the perfect success or failure of an event (HP, PP, Fate Card drains).

This section could also grow over time to include real community examples or additions.

Up the Ante would also encourage providing higher risk/reward templates with suggestions of how to increase the benefit from a success under challenging conditions, as well as what the event of failure means in a particularly tense scenario.

The epic event for a Death Save can also be included on the Up the Ante table to indicate the stakes of the event. This way we can write a specific epic event scenario for Death and leave it in a place that is still part of the official "Epic Event" knowledge section of the core rules.

I find this different than the additions I was writing before about alternate Epic Events. The Epic Events section will likely have 3 or 4 distinct sections of

  • What it is
  • Ante Up
  • Alternate
  • Mini Games (?)

Mini Games is an idea I was thinking of earlier where a GM could add a traditional card game into a DofA game, especially for a PvP situation.
One example could be calling for a game of Slap Jack when two party members are both trying to impress the bartender at a local tavern.
