Not sure what I think of HUD, and I haven't played with Unity much, but I'll keep it in mind. First I should probably take a look at what Unity has done with it. I don't care much for Unity overall, but I'm always willing to steal good ideas. ;)
In many cases spacefm uses context menus so that rather than digging through a prefs dialog, you can access relevant settings right where you are. It also allows for key shortcuts to almost anything. And to some extent its economics - menus are a cheap way to build a prototype. As spacefm matures, some of the menus may morph into dialogs, etc., so as that happens I'll keep the HUD approach in mind as well - thanks for your input.
As an application with a lot of context menus it would benefit from some HUD integration :]
