Detailed description of your suggestion

Thanks to the "Paint Through Transparency" setting, toggling on "Lock Alpha Channel" has the added effect of letting us paint on the geometry through transparent pixels.

I would like a togglable tool (like "Erasing Mode" or "Lock Alpha channel") that enables all standard painting tools to work through full transparency:

  • Paint Brush
  • Copy Brush
  • Erasing
  • Draw Shape
  • Gradient Tool
  • Color Picker

"Lock Alpha Channel" would then strictly do what it says, and the "Paint Through Transparency" setting would be retired to avoid redundancy.

This would allow a variety of more efficient ways of painting/erasing on the model, without having to hide or lock elements, or resorting to use the Paint panel.

I demonstrate some of these in this video:

  • Painting: You could now paint on non-transparent surfaces on an empty layer > painting irises on the eyes, behind the cube forming the hood.

  • Erasing: You could now erase through completely transparent pixels > erasing the middle of the unibrow behind the hood cube.

  • Drawing a gradient: like Painting > adding the shadow behind the hood cube.

  • Drawing shapes: like Painting > adding the beard behind the hood cube.
