I have been going through a Phoniebox build for my daughter, which serves as a test case for a Phoniebox gift to some of my other friends and families.
The situation is that we'd like to give the Phoniebox as a gift to a family that won't necessarily want to tinker to diagnose when/if it goes wrong. Considerations include:
It should not require WiFi, in large, because diagnosing and connecting to WiFi is a pain.
Visual and audio feedback is important. Status lights, status sounds, or other signs that confirm that the device is working as intended, or provides some feedback when it isn't, is important.
I think a lot can go wrong. With an analog device like a tape recorder, it's very simple: press a button and you see the tape wind. With Raspberry Pis, it's all silent and it's very hard to know what the problem is when something hangs unless you have tinkered yourself and you know the behind-the-scenes.
Have any of you given the Jukebox as a gift? If doing so, how would you ensure that it works as well as it should in the hands of someone who wants Plug and Play?
