Extensions Tabs API Security Analysis

Component Focus

This document analyzes the security of the Chromium Extensions Tabs API, specifically focusing on the tabs API (chrome/browser/extensions/api/tabs/tabs_api.cc). This API provides extensions with powerful capabilities to interact with browser tabs, potentially creating significant security risks if not implemented correctly.

Potential Logic Flaws

  • Insufficient Input Validation: Improper validation of input parameters (e.g., tab IDs, URLs, properties) could lead to various attacks, including injection vulnerabilities. While some validation is performed, particularly for URLs, further analysis is needed to ensure comprehensive input validation for all parameters.

Further Analysis and Potential Issues

Tabs API

The tabs_api.cc file implements the Chrome Extensions API for managing tabs. A detailed analysis of the key functions reveals the following:

  • TabsCreateFunction: Creates new tabs. Uses ExtensionTabUtil::PrepareURLForNavigation for URL validation and sanitization, mitigating some input validation risks. However, other parameters (window_id, opener_tab_id, index) are not fully validated within this function, relying on checks in ExtensionTabUtil::OpenTab. Ensures the tab strip is editable before creating a tab. Logs telemetry about the created tab.

Secure Contexts and Extensions API

The Extensions API operates within the context of web pages, which can be either secure (HTTPS) or insecure (HTTP). Secure contexts provide additional security measures, such as preventing mixed content and enforcing stricter security policies. However, vulnerabilities in the Extensions API itself could still be exploited even within secure contexts. Therefore, robust input validation, secure error handling, and proper authorization checks are crucial for all API functions, regardless of the context.

Privacy Implications

The Extensions API can access and manipulate sensitive user data, such as browsing history, bookmarks, and passwords. Any vulnerabilities in the API could lead to privacy violations. Therefore, privacy-preserving design and implementation are essential.
