Split _data subfolder into a separate repository

I need to reuse various data sets we're currently collecting in the _data folder, e.g. the employee's contact details. However, git still doesn't offer a way to add only parts of a repository as a git submodule. My idea would be to split _data into a separate repository website-data and include it as git submodule within this repository.

What's your opinion on this? Are there any better ways of cloning files from other repositories into third party projects?

Various articles suggest to prefer git subtree over git submodule. I'm still not absolutely convinced.
