Motivation
Wintertime OA is overpredicted and the composition in terms of primary versus secondary and anthropogenic versus biogenic (i.e. alkane+aromatic vs. BBOA+VCP) has not been explored. Nighttime oxidation with NO3 radical has been hypothesized in recent literature to be a significant contributor to RWC SOA.

Approach
Use aircraft and ground measurements from the WINTER campaign to further constrain OA sources and in situ chemical reactions. Explore the impact of NO3 radical oxidation of woodburning emissions.

Expected Results
Model developments needed (e.g. modified chemical reactions, modified emission factors or speciation) to improve the evaluation against WINTER results will be used to improve the CMAQ operational modeling platform and CRACMM specifically.

Specific Tasks

  • Add NO3 radical oxidation of key woodburning emitted compounds
  • Quantify impact on wintertime predictions
  • Evaluate impact on model performance assessed against measured data collected during WINTER.
