缘起
编程随想的博客于2009年1月15日开博，其作者自称是工作多年的程序员，一开始主要写电脑技术相关的文章为主。按编程随想的自述，当初决定开始大量写作政治敏感文章，是由于2010年与2011年间钱云会事件与中国茉莉花活动的发生[9]。
失联与疑似被捕
截至2021年5月9日，编程随想已发表712篇博文。但在当天之后，编程随想再未更新博文，其GitHub、Twitter等账号亦全部静默。编程随想先前曾表示，若其在全平台无任何活动超过2周，则意味着遭到当局跨省抓捕或人身受到重大伤害[10]。
6月14日，据自由亚洲电台报道，有消息人士表示编程随想疑似遭到警察逮捕[8]。
7月1日，中共建党百年，编程随想并未如其在5月8日给读者的回复中所称[11]，发表博文，给党庆献礼。

为了照顾不善于翻墙的内地读者，《编程随想》提供了“离线浏览”和“邮件订阅”功能[13]。关于“离线浏览”，网站提供了“电子书打包脚本”，可以把离线浏览的内容打包成一个EPUB或CHM文件格式的电子书，在手机或平板上离线阅读《编程随想》上的全部内容。

《太子党关系网络》项目（zhao项目）创建于2016年2月29日，编程随想搜集维基百科、《纽约时报》、《华尔街日报》、百度百科等媒体上的公开信息，整理出中国共产党“权贵阶层”包括130多个家族、700多人的资料和关系网络。
2016年6月8日，中国网络空间安全协会用英文致信GitHub，称其平台上项目zhao下的一个issue“无根据地恶意诋毁”中国国家主席习近平涉嫌杀害自己的同父异母的哥哥习正宁，并要求尽快删除该issue。[14][15]三天后，GitHub在专门公布各国政府发出的移除要求的版面上，公布了这封信件。虽然没有删除这篇文章，但GitHub已经阻止中国大陆用户访问“zhao”项目。这是2014年10月以来，GitHub公布的第6项“删除特定项目要求”，此前5项都来自俄罗斯。[14][15][16]
2019年1月，《太子党关系网络》版本2.0发布[17]。
