via Front-end registration. Currently you have to write a plugin. I realize this could present a security risk if not done correctly. You could limit the user groups (none of which would have admin privileges) that are allowed to be selected via the front-end form by user or through hidden input field.

An admin shouldn't have to designate which group a user belongs to after registration, nor should it be so complex as writing a plugin to implement this functionality!

I think user groups is mostly about access permissions. What about using a category or maybe even a dropdown as a profile field, if you want non-admins to do user grouping / categorization?
