Fonts

Malfunctions in Greek and Latin

  • E1: Bold Sans serif ώ shows as italics

  • E2: Bold Sans serif Ῥ (capital rho + rough breathing) produces strange symbol on page

  • E3: Italics ά, έ, ή, ό, ύ, and ώ look larger than other letters – perhaps an illusion

  • E4: Spacing of lettering in bold sans serif (especially λ), also horizontal position imperfect

  • E5: Spacing of lettering in italic font after upper case Ρ

  • E6: Ἐ, Ἠ, Ἰ, Ὀ, Ὠ smooth breathing merges with upper case letter in bold sans serif font (e.g. Ἠλείδης, Ἠλίας); similar problem with capital Ρ with rough breathing.

image

  • E7: Ratio of font size for places between upper case main headings (e.g. Bostra) and normal type for subordinate places (e.g. Umm al-Gimal or Azzeira). Compare with LGPN VIC

  • E8: ε or ο + ~ accent fonts not available? (e.g. )

  • E9: Υ + smooth breathing font available?

  • E10: Dotted upper case letters in Latin script, and some lower case letters are missing in pdf (b, y, z, e.g. Βαρχαλβας Barchalbas 12)

image

image

  • E11: Book numbers for literary texts should be lower case Roman not small caps Roman; the problem only occurs where there is no book title, e.g. D.S. xxiii not xxiii

  • E12: μ why does μ appear but not the other Greek letters? (Εὔδημος Eudemos 2) Also ππ (Papias 2, 4, 6)

Malfunctions in non-Greek, mostly Syriac.

  • mtqr’ br b‘’
  • [] br’t’ (e.g. Βαραθης Barathes 27) [can't reproduce]

image

  • ’[wt]l (e.g. Euthallos 2), ’wlwgys, ’wsb (Eulogis 2, Eusebis 34) [can't reproduce]

image

  • ’wngl’ (e.g. Euaggelos 4), ’sṭpn’ (Stephanos 256), ‘stwrg’ (Astourgas 2) can't reproduce

image

  • E17: ‘bdʾlnm (e.g. Ἱερώνυμος Hieronymos 14)

image

  • E18: ʼsydwrʼ (Isidoros 14) but OK for ’ysdwr’ (Isidoros 45)

image

image

image

  • E19: nwn’ (Nonnos 35) but OK for nwn’ (Nonnos 36), though they are identical can't reproduce

image

  • same with pwl’ (Paulos 157) and pwl’ (Paulos 156, 158) can't reproduce

image

  • l’wn (Leon 16), also lbʼt (Lobaiathos 1), lwly’n’ (Lollianus 5), myk’yl (Michael 4)

image

  • šy‘’l (Saielos 1) can't reproduce

image

  • E20: ʿbdʾ as relation of Seleukos 12

image

image

  • E21: Under-dotted d (ḑ) in Arabic and other non-Greek languages

    under dot or cedilla under?

  • E22: Half square brackets, e.g. bs⸤s⸥, do not show Βάσσος 70

image

image

  • ǰamāspa (Zamasphes 1) can't find this case, possibly removed

image

  • E23: Qaṣr Abī Samrāʼ (place name)

image

Typesetting

  • Uneven bottom of columns
  • Running heads
  • Blank lines inserted, apparently at random
  • Greek characters within a reference, e.g. Suda Φ, or St. Byz. s.v. Φ.....in both primary and secondary sources
  • ?= does not function when relating people whose initial letters differ. In the past this has required manual editing in the TeX files

Sources misconstructed

  • Space at end of each example of a name before ; This is the cause of many orphan ;
  • fict. should output
  • No space between + and following ref. when used to link two refs.; same with ;= (this seems to be an inconsistent problem, viz. Γεώργις 54 : space between + and 69 as in 55 and 56; no difference in style of entries
  • No space between ib. and bracketed source type, e.g. ib.(gem), ib.(graffito)
  • Space between opening bracket and text, e.g. ( XLVIII : is it always before small Roman caps?
  • Place? (territ.) or (area) produces Place?? (territ.) (area)
  • Treatment of n.pr.? – in brackets when following text, otherwise unbracketed (e.g. Korasion 1)
  • Over reduction of references, notably Cyr. S. refs involving more than one title, the +V. after the first title is cut.
  • ; ; before cf. secondary ref., but not systematic
  • Relationship type (f., m., s., d.) omitted where gender of person is unknown. Should output as f./m. or s./d.
  • Generation numbers frequently added inappropriately to a family member – e.g. Kassisaios 2
  • Place order after Syria? E.g. Βακχίς 1 and 2 – Laodikeia comes before Antiocheia. This is a consistent problem. Extreme cases Apollonios 174-213 (placed before Syria (Batanaia)), Dionysios 182-212 (placed before Syria (Trachon)).
