What we've learned: It's been observed that users have had difficulty finding search results on the election search page. Often the results populate below the fold and users cannot tell that the search has worked.

The problem seems to be that there is no visual cue that the page has changed in any way. From their perspective, between selecting a state or year, there's no visual change. Other than the map updating. But it seems even that is unclear to our users that their search has, in fact, yielded results.

Recommendation:
Redesign the election search page to improve usability and ensure that users are able to quickly and easily locate search results and continue on with their research.

We've redesigned the election search page and following implementation either to dev or prod, we can test for the following things:

  • Are users still able to conduct an election search and find what they're looking for?
  • Are users better able to distinguish when results populate on the page?
  • Do they appear to quickly find the desired Senate or House election?
  • Since we have removed the explainer text from the results, is it still clear to users what they can expect in their search?
  • Do users search using the fields or by clicking through on the map?
  • Does including the 2020 Presidential election by default throw users off that a search has already been completed? Is that a blocker for them to understand that they can still complete a search using the search fields or map?
