Now that openmc-dev/openmc#2096 has been merged in the default branch, this feature will be in the next openmc release.

Does that mean this package has no more use?

Perhaps but I think there might be a few things needed to completely replace everything

openmc release and updated conda package
making a vtk with useful units (e.g. Watts/m3) is still not super easy in openmc
