I find the hammer rotation to be non-intuitive. Regardless of the block face I'm right-clicking with the hammer, the block is only rotated around the X axis.
If I shift-right-click, it's first mirrored across Z (or rotated twice around Y), and I'm having trouble figuring out what the next one is because it's at least 3 rotations, I think :)
I suggest that a right-click rotates 90 degrees around the axis perpendicular to the face being clicked, and a shift-right-click just does a simple mirror flip.
edit: I just RTFM so I understand how it's coded at the moment but I still feel that my suggestion is a more intuitive (IE we've been trained that way through other mods like Carpenter's Blocks) way.
