Hi everyone, I'm pleased to announce another update to the GeckoLinux NEXT Plasma edition. The purpose of this edition is not to replace the regular GeckoLinux Static Plasma release, but rather as an alternative for those who want the latest Plasma stable release on top of a stable openSUSE Leap base. This is achieved thanks to some additional OBS repositories, together with the polished GeckoLinux configuration for the Plasma desktop. Like all GeckoLinux editions, Plasma NEXT can be smoothly updated from the official repositories of openSUSE and Packman as new package versions become available. In the case of the GeckoLinux NEXT Plasma edition, the next major release of Plasma 5 will also be available from the official KDE repositories in the openSUSE Build Service whenever it is released at a future date.

What's New:

The major new feature of this release is the brand new Plasma 5.13 desktop environment. It also includes KDE Applications 18.04 and the KDE Framework at version 5.47.0.

Apart from the Plasma and KDE highlights, the base system of this GeckoLinux NEXT Plasma update is now in line with the latest openSUSE Leap 15.0 release. There are many, many new package versions in this release-- the Linux kernel at version 4.12.14, Firefox Quantum 60, LibreOffice 6.0.4, and countless more available in the software repositories. The greatly improved Calamares installer at version 3.2 with updated versions of major underlying utilities will make installing GeckoLinux straightforward and reliable. (Note: the old yast2-live-installer that used to be available in GeckoLinux was deprecated by openSUSE a long time ago, and unfortunately it is no longer compatible with the current state of openSUSE.)

The GeckoLinux project is pleased to release updated spins of both ROLLING and STATIC editions. GeckoLinux spins are based on the openSUSE distribution, with a focus on polish and out-of-the-box usability on the desktop. A large variety of customized desktop options are available in STATIC (based on openSUSE Leap) and ROLLING (based on openSUSE Tumbleweed) editions. After installation to the hard disk, a GeckoLinux system will continue to receive updates from the openSUSE and Packman infrastructures. An installed system can even be upgraded smoothly to future openSUSE releases while at the same time retaining its unique GeckoLinux configuration.

GeckoLinux ROLLING spins are based on the extremely well tested and reliable openSUSE Tumbleweed distribution, with the inclusion of proprietary packages from the Packman project. Additional proprietary package repositories from Google, Skype, and Nvidia are also pre-configured. This release of GeckoLinux ROLLING has been a long time in coming due to some minor but annoying bugs in the upstream openSUSE Tumbleweed branch, which have finally been resolved. There are many, many new package versions in this release-- the Linux kernel at version 4.16.12, Firefox Quantum 60, LibreOffice 6.0.4, and countless more available in the software repositories. The greatly improved Calamares installer at version 3.2 with updated versions of major underlying utilities will make installing GeckoLinux straightforward and reliable. (Note: the old yast2-live-installer that used to be available in GeckoLinux was deprecated by openSUSE a long time ago, and unfortunately it is no longer compatible with the current state of openSUSE.) Separate GeckoLinux ROLLING spins are available with a polished configuration for each of the following desktop environments:

  • Cinnamon version 3.8.3 (download here)
  • XFCE version 4.12 (download here)
  • Gnome version 3.28 (download here)
  • Plasma 5.12.5 and KDE Frameworks 5.46.0 and KDE Applications 18.04 (download here)
  • Mate version 1.20 (download here)
  • LXQt version 0.12.0 (download here)
  • GeckoLinux "BareBones" spin for advanced users and distro creators (download here)
  • Note: the Budgie Desktop spin of GeckoLinux is unavailable at the moment because it is not working properly under openSUSE.

GeckoLinux is pleased to announce updated ISOs for all of its Plasma editions. These include Plasma-specific enhancements to the major 201205.999 and 201210.152 updates in the complete range of GeckoLinux spins.

  • KF5 5.77.0
  • Qt 5.15.2
