Don't auto-hide active message

When "Auto Mark As Read" and "Hide read messages" are enabled, and a scheduled batch auto-downloads new messages, the current display is refreshed and all read messages including the active message currently being read then disappear. It is really annoying! Please don't auto-hide the currently active message. In fact, please don't hide read messages until I leave the currently selected newsgroup.

It seems more like a logical issue and those settings should probably be mutually exclusive. One or the other, but never allow both.

For your problem, wouldn't a better to disable "Auto Mark as Read" and instead use the setting in "Account -> Account Properties -> Basic Account Settings -> Mark messages as read when leaving the group in this account"?

I like using "Auto Mark as Read". It goes inline with how other email readers work. But I don't want to use "Mark messages as read when leaving the group in this account", because I only want to mark messages that I have actually read. I want to be able to jump around groups and read messages as I see fit. When a read message is hidden, it is very difficult to go back to it.

OK, so am I understanding you correctly.... You want "auto mark as read" on. So while reading a message it gets marked as read, then when you click on the next unread message, the previous one should become hidden (because of "Hide read messages")?

If I am reading a message, and it gets marked as read, I don't want the message to become hidden while I am still reading it because "Hide Read Messages" gets checked when the group is updated. It has happened enough times to be annoying. I have to disable "Hide Read Messages" to get back to the message I was reading. I don't really care when the message is actually hidden after I have finished reading it, whether it is when I go to another message in the same group, or when going to another group.
