Great pilot studies! Lots of questions uncovered, but better now than later.
Video games
This pilot study seems to suggest that you have to further refine your question. You'll want to specifically think what variables/features to consider in your model and how you will operationalize them. In example, you may want to consider the "amount" of pre-sale as the amt of pre-sale / total sales to account for sales. You may want to consider amount of time a game was on pre-sale for. We can talk about this further.
Crime reporting
This uncertainty of type of reporting is reasonable (911 operator gets information from potentially panicked citizen), but how bad it is/if you need to deal with it depends on your question and decision context. I think this may be a challenge to operationalizing the "severity" of the crime, I suppose.
Some ways to further focus your thinking:
who are the stakeholders who want to inform? Focusing on informing consumers vs city officials (for example) changes your study.
what do you want to optimize?
