Where is `_hbsys` supposed to be created? #1

I get the following while attempting to build:

/bin/sh: line 1: cd: ../_hbsys: No such file or directory
make: *** [Makefile:75: install] Error 1

Inspecting the Makefile, I am not seeing where _hbsys is supposed to have been created. What gives?
