From the point of view of usability, I'm not exactly sure why Get Windows and Save Config are two separate steps. It makes more sense to me that it should be a single operation to save the state of the windows. A suggested approach:

  • Combine the Get Windows and Save Config into a new menu item called "Save Window Positions". There would be a "Restore Window Positions" entry, which would perform the same action as left clicking the icon.
  • The shortcut of left-clicking the icon in the tray to "Restore Window Positions" would remain
  • A new shortcut could be added: Double clicking the icon would "Save Window Positions"
  • Even better, have an option that can be toggled on and off to automatically "Save Window Positions" on a timer (e.g., every second). This will help with restoring windows after re-docking the laptop if someone forgets to save the windows first.

Yep!
I've thought the same thing but didn't do it because I don't want every window being remembered, only the most used ones.
I think the best approach is to have the "one second, remember" another option in the menu, and the most used, the default.
It is a new feature!
I have to add a small window to be able to give a "configuration name" and, on left click, restore the last known state (one second monitoring) and one menu entry for saved ones. (Essentially what you are proposing.)
Just let me time to do it!

Thanks for your time and interest!

Or: make some presets (1 sec/5 sec) and a custom timer.

That's it!
It is done. Now it will read windows postitions every second on desktop at start and if desktop remains at same size. When there is an increment on size, it still read positions every second.
When the desktop shrinks, it stops reading windows positions and, when the desktop goes to its bigger size again it will reposition windows.

Hope it is useful.

There is one step.
If you undock the laptop at work and dock at home, if the screens (all screens) resolutions aren't the same they won't reposition. We have to select "Get windows" from menu and everything will work as expected.
