Minor issue since there is a workaround, see bottom.

When restoring, VMWare Workstation is moved to the correct monitor, but retains the size it had on the smaller-res laptop screen. Also, the menus/controls no longer appear when hovering near the top of the screen. This only happens when the guest OS was running fullscreen, not in windowed mode, nor windowed & maximised. This does not happen when Windows moves VMWare to the new primary display after reconnecting the external monitor. Only when being moved by winredock.

Not sure if this is VMWare specific, or the same for all fullscreen applications. Could this be solved by making fullscreen windows leave fullscreen before being moved, and re-enter fullscreen afterwards?

Tip for those encountering a similar issue: you can restore sanity by focusing VMWare and using the hotkey (default is Ctrl-Alt if I'm not mistaken) + ENTER, twice.

Yes. it is a known issue with all full screen windows.
I'm not having time to solve this just now, but I will as I use Virtualbox full screen (two monitors) extensively at work, and Emacs, also full screen. As you mention, the full screen state is preserved but it maintains the small screen resolution.

I'm going to investigate this as I can reproduce it with VirtualBox.
