I successfully booted an EFISTUB kernel located in an ESP residing on the eMMC with a pristine upstream U-Boot v2025.01 tag + lk2nd 20.0 on my samsung-a5 today. This includes a working simplefb (with the caveats I already documented in #2). Perhaps it's time to use the upstream instead of Caleb's branch?

We'd lose the downstream phone.config and env file that prepares a nice mobile-friendly bootmenu. But perhaps those config fragments and extras could be carried in this repo?
