What happened to level 0 and 1? #169

I can't find the documentation for level 0 or level 1 C2M2 models. Where did they go? |

In early versions of the C2M2 we distinguished between 'levels' of the model, where level 0 had only one table, and level 1 had more than 20. This was supposed to make the model easier to understand, however, once DCCs started using the model, it became clear that this arbitrary distinction was making the model harder to use, not easier. In February 2021, we officially moved away from level0/level1 to using one set of tables for all submissions, and providing several worked examples for different ways they can be filled. A full submission would fill all tables. A minimal submission is where the DCC only fills 4 of the tables. To increase the information of a minimal submission, a DCC might choose to add information to a fifth table. For instance, a DCC could bump the minimal model up in richness by also filling the biosample table, but still leaving all the other tables empty. This type of submission, that is intermediate our previous level0/level1 nomenclature was previously possible, but was poorly defined, and would require a custom JSON file. In our level-less scheme, everyone uses the same JSON file, and only fills the tables that are useful for their dataset. A DCC can fill any subset of tables so long as that subset builds a connected model diagram. An example of one way to do a mid-complexity submission can be found here We’re hoping this will be both less confusing, and more flexible for DCCs that couldn’t easily use what we were calling level 1, but can use the less rigid requirements. |
