This is a quick description of the PhotonSaw project and an index to the rest of the wiki.
The basic idea is to build a large 80W LASER cutter for OSAA and as a side-effect have some fun learning about mechanics, optics, stepper motors, g-code, postscript and lots of other interesting techniques.
These are the critical main parts of the project:
- Buy the LaserSystem, 80 Watt CO2 LASER and PSU and play around with it. -Done
- Buy Optics - Done
- Build Mechanics (X/Y/Z robot and enclosure)
- Build Electronics (PSUs, Stepper drivers).
- Code Software (g-code interpreter, postscript-to-gcode, access control, web server)
- Install at OSAA (plumb into power, network and exhaust)
Once the critical goals have been reached there are several enhancements that could be done if we get too much funding:
- Build a proper cutting table with a honeycomb surface.
- Build and program an embedded Linux box to offer a web interface for management and printer server.
- Integrate gas fire suppression (CO2 tank + release valve)
- Nitrogen generator for assist air and fire suppression.
- Rotating jig for engraving or cutting round objects.
- In parallel with the actual work we're also working on PayingForItAll though sponsorships.
