Virtual Coffee Town Hall – December 13, 2024

Intro

We’ve been doing this since April 2020, and we’ve loved the growth we’ve seen. Virtual Coffee's mission is to be a welcoming tech community that allows room for growth and mentorship at all levels, and to create meaningful opportunities for learning, leadership, and contribution for everyone.

Last Meeting Follow-up

Summary of Community Changes

1. There has been a change in Maintainer Roles.
   1. Bekah is the Special Events Maintainer. Meg is the Weekly Events Maintainer. Kirk is the Community Health Maintainer. Dan is the Technology Support Maintainer.
   2. We're trying to be flexible and responsive to the community's needs and are still finalizing the details of each roles' duties. See our latest Maintainer Roles descriptions in our VC-Community-Docs.
2. The VC-Community-Docs repo is now open sourced!
   1. This repo provides transparency for our community and acts as another opportunity for people to engage and/or learn how to contribute to open source.
3. Hacktoberfest was a success! Here are some stats:
   1. 32 participants
   2. 9 mentors for 14 mentees
   3. We plan to continue next year and will hopefully have some issues of both the VC-Community-Docs and virtualcoffee.io repos.

Outstanding Open Items

1. The virtualcoffee.io website was moved from Remix.js to Next.js
   1. The next phases are in planning, which include:
      1. Adding a blog
      2. Adding documentation (possibly using Docusaurus)
      3. A redesign using TailwindCSS (starting with the home page)

New Business

Quarter Challenges

• We will begin grouping challenges together into multi-month themes called Quarter Challenges
• The idea is to give our members a chance to join in on the Challenges at their convenience
  • It will also allow participants to build momentum by focusing on one or a grouped set of topics for a quarter, rather than just one month
• Don't worry – we'll still have your favorite Monthly Challenges too!
  • They'll be sprinkled in between the Quarter Challenges
• We hope this will pace things out better overall for the challenge participants – and planners

Town Halls

What does everyone think of the Town Halls format? Do we have any suggestions?

• Give at least one month's notice
  • Send a notice through the newsletter
  • Announce it during VC Coffees
  • Post it in the Slack #announcements channel
• Send the agenda out the the members ahead of the Town Hall

Suggestions for Community Improvement

• Update Coffee Tables section on VC-Community-Docs
• Create 'Add to calendar' link for Google and Outlook in addition to iCal for the site's events page
  • Create same link for #announcements/#vc-events channels on Slack
• Rebrand Slack's #co-working-room to make it more casual
• Create a Slack shortcut to display info about VC
• Create a VC social media presence on BlueSky
