Some suggestions for subcategories so far, which could be provided by VABO but unused by default:

Radial mounts/adapters

Launch Escape Systems

Edited to stay up to date

Nice, looks good. A "cryogenic engines" one is probably the only one I'd say is really missing in base VABO now.

For BDB I'm manually defining "satellites" (all-in-one probes), "service modules" (multi-purpose fuel tanks with extra functions), "interstages" (solid part engine shroud decouplers), and "launch adapters" (saturn petal launch adapters and dual payload adapters)

"Interstages" is one that is possibly useful for multiple mods, but it's fairly uncommon to do engine shrouds like this, so I think just having it user-defined is fine.

I'd say "Radial Adapters" could be good to include, maybe even active in the stock config, for stackPoint1, and possibly smallHardpoint and structuralPylon. I've added it on BDB's side for now as we have a few, but it's a fairly generic part type that could come up in station part mods fairly often.

Liquid Fuel engines is missing the "engines" part of it's title, so it's inconsistent with the rest of the engine categories.
