Specifically, the embedding of the fundamental group of the surface within the fundamental group of the enclosing manifold.

Technically it would only be an embedding for an (algebraically) incompressible surface. The map is reasonably-computable with the code in NCellularData. . . once that code is up and running again.

You could also get the map on homology and see what the fundamental class represents, etc. This is a pretty reasonable thing to code up. . . eventually.
