How does unit testing fit into the project/package workflow

Do you have thoughts on how unit tests should be included in the workflow for package development using testthat or other packages?

I'll try to say this "out loud" at some point, but just to make sure I answer here: the scope of this workshop doesn't extend to package development. But @jimhester or I would be happy to talk about it at a break or lunch.
