🎨 The Ultimate List of Digital Painting & Image Editing Apps

Ultimate list of image editing, graphics editing, digital drawing/sketching(/prototyping/GUI-wireframing)&painting software (the focus is on open-source/FOSS and freeware apps). These apps are for the modern desktop OS trinity: Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, Apple macOS. Most apps in the list are FOSS or freeware. The list aims at being highly inclusive while still focusing on recommending the best apps. Most of the digital painting apps in the list also support using a graphics tablet (e.g. Wacom tablets) aside from using a computer mouse and keyboard (check each app's features list or documentation for details).

This list is particularly suitable for people who add graphics-editing art-software to their Linux distro (or who package art software for related repositories , i.e. compiled binary-from-source packages) and for people who use computers mostly for digital/mixed-media art production/editing.

Art program testing
Windows: I tried out Photoshop, Sketchbook, Krita, Paint Tool SAI, and GIMP. Got a very small lag in Photoshop. The driver was pretty sensitive in Photoshop (going from thick to thin quickly).

Like other tablets besides Wacom, you can use the Ace Pen with vector programs such as Inkscape and Illustrator but doesn’t give pressure sensitivity in Illustrator. You can use SAI vector layers with the Ace Pen  if you want pressure in vector drawing.

Comparing it to the Intuos Pro, which is far more expensive, you don’t get tilt, touch, wireless, or bundled software, or app-specific customization, or the ability to use different kinds of physical pens. So the Acepen is more comparable to the regular Intuos but has more pressure levels and may later get tilt.

The image font used here is the GNU Unifont! Current version here is Unifont 9.0.02 .

Roman Czyborra created the original GNU Unifont, including the .hex format. For greater detail, see the HISTORY in the GNU Unifont README.

David Starner aggregated many glyphs contributed by others and incorporated these into pre-2004 Unifont releases.

Qianqian Fang began his Wen Quan Yi font in 2004, by which time work on Unifont had stopped. Most of the almost 30,000 CJK ideographs in Unifont versions 5.1 and later were taken from Wen Quan Yi with permission of Qianqian Fang. The glyphs in "./font/plane00/wqy-cjk.hex" are for the most part Qianqian Fang's Unibit and Wen Quan Yi glyphs.

Paul Hardy drew most of the newly-drawn glyphs added to the BMP from the Unifont 5.1 release to the present release. This includes the 11,172 glyphs in the Hangul Syllables block, plus approximately 10,000 additional glyphs scattered throughout the BMP.

  • Add screenshots for each app = TEDIOUS, IT WILL TAKE A LOT OF TIME. For now just use the RECOMMENDED & HIGHLY RECOMMENDED apps in the list...
  • Maybe add FOSS 3D software as a separate category, e.g. Blender 3D, and also FOSS pixel-art-like voxel editors (e.g. MagicaVoxel 2 3 4 (+IsoVoxel 3D-voxel TO isometric pixel-art plug-in))?
