auto-detect conversion should allow --pad #729

the --pad option is available for convert_image_stack (I think?) but not for the auto-detect converter. Thus, it is not available for the wk-worker

Instead of adding --pad, we might just use the new add_layer_from_images (PR #741) and use it instead of the custom logic.
