What's wrong?

I asked AI for a bit of help since I'm a total n00b (#lol). Here's the issue I'm facing.

Issue: Unexpected shutdown with fans running at max speed after crash

System Information:

  • Laptop Model: ROG Zephyrus G14 GA401IU_GA401IU
  • GHelper Version: 0.200.0.0

Issue Description:
My computer experiences unexpected shutdowns where:

  1. Everything goes black (complete shutdown)
  2. Both CPU and GPU fans immediately run at what sounds like >100% speed
  3. The fans continue running at this speed even though the system is powered off

Configuration:

  • Fan curve is set to reach 100% at 69°C for both CPU and GPU
  • All other settings are at default values
  • No custom power limits are set

Latest Occurrence:
Date: January 6, 2025
Time: Around 7:30 AM

Logs:

  1. GHelper log shows a sequence:
    7:28:22 AM - Monitor dims
    7:30:13 AM - App restarts with "Startup Battery Limit 65"
    7:30:24-7:30:40 AM - Normal startup sequence
    7:37:40 AM - WMI event 87 triggers followed by power mode changes

  2. Windows Event Viewer shows a critical error (Event ID 41) at the time of crash:

<Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event">
<System>
  <Provider Name="Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Power" Guid="{331c3b3a-2005-44c2-ac5e-77220c37d6b4}" />
  <EventID>41</EventID>
  <Version>9</Version>
  <Level>1</Level>
  <TimeCreated SystemTime="2025-01-06T12:29:47.7488455Z" />
</System>
<EventData>
  <Data Name="BugcheckCode">0</Data>
  <Data Name="SleepInProgress">0</Data>
  <Data Name="PowerButtonTimestamp">0</Data>
  <Data Name="LongPowerButtonPressDetected">false</Data>
  <Data Name="LidState">1</Data>
</EventData>
</Event>

Additional Information:

The issue occurs even with default power settings
The system shows no warning before shutdown
Fans continue running at extreme speed after complete system shutdown
The only way to get out of there is to hold down the power button for 10+ seconds until the computer reboots

I can provide additional logs or information if needed.

How to reproduce the bug?

Do nothing. It happens when idle.

@virtualfoodtours hello,

Your device is probably overheating or shutting down due to some other underlying hardware / firmware problems. G-Helper has nothing to do with it as it's not a driver and not running your system.

  • BIOS usually ramps up fans to 100% when it either detects overheating or can't detect temperatures at all (so it could be some sensors on motherboard failing, after all your device is quite old)

  • Windows 41 event - just says that system was abruptly turned off

I would recommend going through steps in Troubleshooting page, especially doing a clean driver install, checking system for a corrupt files and also resetting all possible custom settings that might have set back to all defaults.

Thanks.
