My first career in electronics span 22 yrs of my life. Over time I became a field service engineer. That just means I traveled a lot. My freelance career started in 2003 the year my daughter was born. My career switch from electronic hardware to software was phased in over a long period of time. (this is really the short story).
I have been one to follow the path of going with the flow.
I found OpenEMR in 2009 when a customer asked me to help them find a better alternative to the EHR they were using at the time. I decided to stick with OpenEMR and build a career around it. I learned PHP through a lot of online courses and determination. I learn as much as I can about the program and keep taking online courses in PHP, Javascript, and anything else that helps me build features for the OpenEMR project.
Reaching this goal will allow me to donate more time to those who cannot afford to pay. There are a lot of people that post questions and need just a little help to keep the software going. Providing free help is part of what I do for the community. I try to answer at least 10 questions a month on the message board. As well as help those that contact me directly privately.
