cgminer does not work with catalyst 14.xx drivers (and 13.12 drivers broken for ubuntu 14.04) #6

Situation:

  • Catalyst 13.xx installer is broken for ubuntu 14.04 and above. It can be patched but this can result in unpredictable system performance (e.g. it works, gpus lockup at startup). As time goes on more and more patches are required to work with later and later kernel versions.
  • Ubuntu 14.04 does work with catalyst 14.xx drivers, however the current cgminer for neoscrypt does not work with catalyst 14.xx and results in 100% hardware errors.

Example output:

NOTE: Varying of worksize and other parameters has no impact and 100% HW errors are generated whatever those settings.

Hi Dave,
This could be related to problems I'm getting on windows, i.e 14.xx driver incompatibility.
Can you give some more details about your set-up? eg. the PC hardware (processor, memory) and the card type and number?

Hi,

I have the same problem. I've recently upgraded to Catalyst 14.6 (linux-amd-catalyst-14.6-beta-v1.0-jul11.zip) to get the older cgminer 3.7.2 (I can't remember where I got this source) working again after the upgrade to Ubuntu 14.04.
This was working for a few days mining Feahtercoin before the switch ot neoscrypt.

I then downloaded this version (3.7.7b & 3.7.7c) and compiled against AMDAPPSDK 2.9.1 and the above drivers.

When I start mining with this script...

... all looks OK but I get 100% HW errors...

Sidenote: also have some ASIC Miners running on this machine on an instance of BFGminer. Unplugging these have no effect.

It's part of the messed up OpenCL; I've fixed it, I just need to find what change fixed it (I made many) so I can release that.

I have checked your kernel on my Nvidia-card (GT210) and it is working with nearly the same number of hashes/s there than before (may be a bit more)
I have merged your Cl-kernel into the master branch here.

I have quickly tried today with both wolfs branch and the master one here and it still isn't working for me (invalid nonce-HW error).

Q. Is there a general problem with Cat 14.10, should I downgrade to Cat 14.9?

I will be able to play a bit more later on this week (probably Thursday). As all other reports are that this update has fixed the issue it maybe some problem with my own local setup.

Hi Dave,

I am sorry, but I can't help you there very much. Although I own an AMD card (Sapphire HD6870), it does not work in my system. Supplying power to it with two PCI-e connectors from a 400 Watts PSU and the card does not even show up in the dmi/acpi tables. I fear this is more a problem of my motherboard (Gigabyte GA-965GM) than one of power. Anyway, what does this card need so much power for?
