get database dump of existing website
if we use custom templates or any other custom wordpress code: put code on github. with this php library we can keep track of our custom wordpress code without also committing all the files of wordpress core: https://github.com/roots/wordpress
put website on new server with the database.
test that it all works and fix any issues
point DNS to new IP address
