some users are unable to get past the signup/login screen

seems to affect a low percentage of users. have seen this twice out of all beta testers, so maybe about 10% chance. this is almost definitely due to an issue with the python client. it is not sending a model_loading or model_downloading event, possibly due to a failure to start or a crash.

client behavior:

• user signs up with either google or username/password
• app stays on login screen and does not continue to control panel (because the app is waiting for a model_loading event)
• user restarts application and gets a black screen (because the app is waiting for a model_loading event)
