Summary

Version 1.2 consolidates the history of the CERES DRS Toolkit into a stable release. This will help us maintain, debug, and update the code in a more predictable and reliable way. It includes several bugfixes and improvements from the last few months.

Having a tagged release lets us refer to an identified state in the code that we can compare different sites against.

Should I be using v1.2?

A significant upgrade understandably creates worries, especially for a site that has been chugging along without issue for a time. The changes in this release are mostly small (see Critical Bugs below). DSG will be deploying the upgrade to existing CERES sites slowly, so we can check for any concerns with the sites you produced.

While we cannot directly test all the possible changes, we are confident that enough testing has taken place that problems would be quite rare. If you see a new issue after an upgrade, please contact Patrick Murray-John at the info below.

Critical Bugs

  • DPLA API key fix: Our access to DPLA broke when our key to their data was discontinued. Any sites that depend on resources from DPLA should make sure they are using v1.2 or above. This includes a new, more secure, key to DPLA's data.

  • Geolocation API key fix: Google recently updated their API, which broke our connection to gather location data for mapping. Most sites that use maps should make sure they are using v1.2 or above.

Should I definitely not be using v1.2?

If you are using the Mirador feature, or have any customizations to the theme or plugin, it will be safer not to have the upgrade.

Should I upgrade WordPress to version 5.0 or above?

You might see a message in your sites that a new version of WordPress is available, along with a prompt to update. For CERES sites, that is usually a bad idea, as the current CERES plugin does not fully conform with WordPress 5.x

Anything else I should know?

The upgrade also looks ahead to a completely new version of the plugin, which will be version 2.0 (anticipated Fall 2019). Smaller changes and bugfixes before then are to be expected.
