This is just the subset of changes that fixes the RPC test deadlocking. The other changes, while aiming in the right direction, still have some complexity issues and need further thought to be applied. In the interest of expediting the next release, we "just" fix the test here, and leave the original PR #7 open (which should show a smaller diff as a result).
