A Wii remote and a gun style casing with trigger. Cheapest ones can be obtained from AliExpress etc. for around $10 a pop and will have a mechanical rig to push down the B button on the Wii controller. The Wii Zapper requires a nunchuck but is definitely an option.
For best results, 940nm wavelength LEDs are the most sensitive. Having a wide angle of light doesn't hurt, 45 degrees work quite well.
Ethernet cable is split up to provide pairs as the leads for LEDs (of course any wire will do). Used some testing PCB for easier soldering and cut up a USB cable to connect the series.
The LEDs need to be aligned around the monitor in this fashion:
