Unexplained crashes and screen freezes #8930
Comments
I have been running 0.46.2 for 2 weeks since release & just had the same thing happen for the first time while playing CS2 today. Exactly as described & also running CachyOS(Arch Linux) |
if the screen freezes, that's not a crash, but a lockup. Firstly, I'd try running git. Then, if that also locks up, build it in debug, and open ssh on your computer. When it locks up, use your phone or another computer on your local network to ssh into your locked up device, run |

I have the same issue. Seems to be a kernel panic. Unsure if it's an AMD bug or a hyprland bug.
|
@clover256s when it crashes next time, could you give the |
if ssh wont connect that likely means the entire kernel is unresponsive, which would lead me to believe the problem is bigger than hyprland. |
I first experienced a lockup on Mon 30th Dec but was noticing some intermittent stuttering when playing videos via MPV (hardware decoding) on a second monitor and scrolling Firefox on the first monitor (which is not normal for my particular setup) the previous day. However, the issue has only ceased since rolling all the way back to commit #43ca667 (27/12/24) although I haven't tested all the commits immediately subsequent to that, so can only surmise that the problem was introduced sometime between the 27th and 30th Dec. As a wild guess, I would say that the culprit is one of the monitor-orientated commits, which affects AMD GPUs memory clock(s) in an adverse manner. Sorry that I cannot be more precise but none of the usual debugging techniques reveal anything more substantive regrettably. Happy New Year to all Hyprlanders btw... PS. All my other Hyprland related projects are bang up to date on git and I'm using Arch btw on an all AMD system... :-) |
Also, haven't had any lockups on systems with Intel and NVIDIA gpus thus far, though that could be a mere coincidence of course. |
I didn't have any problems after downgrading the kernel to 6.12.6. I think the problem is kernel and AMD related. |
Sure is an odd one, I'm on kernel 6.12.8 and haven't had any issues since rolling back to commit #43ca667, so it's anyone's guess at this stage. |

Having found some more time to investigate this matter further. I believe I have spotted one significant difference between commit #43ca667 and the latest git. Whilst streaming a video on a second 4k@60Hz monitor and running all other apps on a separate 1080@60Hz monitor (each with its own port - same GPU) on my stable Hyprland build (i.e. commit #43ca667). I note via AMDGPU_TOP, that the GFX_MCLK remains constant at 100% thus producing a flat-line graph, whereas when performing the exact same set of tasks with the latest Hyprland git, GFX_MCLK is fluctuating between 70 to 100% thus producing a saw-tooth graph. This I assume, please bear in mind that I am not a computer graphics expert by any stretch of the imagination, explains the stuttering I am witnessing which is symptomatic of MCLK re-clocking flicker I am led to believe. Even though both monitors possess the exact same refresh rate, simply moving the mouse cursor between monitors/workspaces seems to be causing constant mode resets to the extent where stuttering, lagging, scrolling difficulties and even screen lock-ups may occur. In fact, merely hovering the mouse cursor over a URL hyperlink in Firefox on one monitor can cause minor video aberrations on the other monitor with the latest git build I find, whereas everything is smooth and dandy with the older stable build. As I have readily admitted above, I'm no expert when it comes to these matters, but hopefully someone far more knowledgeable can decipher what's going awry from my layman's eye-witness account. |
In case anyone's interested in gaining a different perspective as to what their beloved AMD GPU is up to, the tool described in my previous comment can be found here:- |
This all seems very similar to what I've experienced with AMD, I don't think it's Hyprland like others have pointed out. I have had these crashes on every configuration imaginable in terms of software. I've just accepted them at this point my computer just do that it hates me I guess, happened on Windows but much more rarely to be fair. I have since however upgraded my motherboard and CPU though, and some said that fixed it for them? I haven't had any more crashes so far at least, but too early to say really. When they happened I would always get a MCE (Machine Check Exception) which is usually RAM or CPU related, do you get the same by any chance? I guess if they aren't fixed might try sending my GPU back if I even still can, it's been a while it's only a minor annoyance anyway |
"...When they happened I would always get a MCE (Machine Check Exception) which is usually RAM or CPU related, do you get the same by any chance?..." Not that I'm aware of... Funny thing is, I have two other Wayland based DEs installed on the AMD machine, which are both perfectly stable performing the same set of tasks. Plus the fact that Hyprland seems fine up to a certain point. I remain somewhat unconvinced that it's solely hardware related. Anyway, I'm sure it'll all come out in the wash in due course, it usually does... |
UPDATE:- If anyone else is experiencing the oddities I've described above regarding Firefox, MPV, etc. then perhaps you may like to give what user 'goggi' suggests under issue #8983 a try. See #8983 for further details. Has definitely helped to vanquish a lot of the problems I've been experiencing of late... |

Description
I have not been able to figure out the reason, this kind of crash, this situation is always inexplicable, common is the crash, the screen freezes, press any key does not work can only restart the device, there is also a situation, but also suddenly the screen freezes, after the black screen, and then the screen, has been the cycle of this, and finally is also a crash!
