Gene Network is a web application created in the department of genetics in University Medical Center Groningen. It has been made for scientists who are interested in:
- In which pathways or phenotypes genes are involved
- In which tissues and cell types genes are expressed
- What kind of co-regulation networks disease genes form and which pathways are enriched among them
- Which genes might be culprits for a patient's illness
The data behind Gene Network is publicly available RNA-seq data downloaded from the European Nucleotide Archive. The data are a heterogenous set of samples from human tissues and human-derived cell lines. Based on these data, we apply statistical methods to predict functions for nearly all human genes and to comprehensively annotate the samples to tissues and cell types. The Gene Network itself is an interface to the results of these statistical methods. The aim has been to have an easy and enjoyable way to browse genes, pathways and phenotypes and subsequently form biological hypotheses or find candidate genes for experiments or diagnosis.
This wiki is a technical documentation of the Gene Network web application.
