Trekking MTB Profiles legend

  • Trekking MTB profiles are rather for making trekking routes more MTB-like. They can be used for MTB, especially if you want to play with tuning between Trekking and MTB purpose. But for serious and true MTB, the profiles like @zossebart MTB profiles may be better.

  • The idea behind Trekking MTB profiles is involving MTB_factor, that causes progressive promotion of "bad" ways worse than small paved ways and penalization of mainroads. It also causes progressive cancelling eventual way roughness ( combined Smoothness/MTB-scale penalty ) and Elevationcost, ( fully at MTB_factor = +3.0 ).

  • The rate of promotion/penalization is given by the multiple of way coefficient from interval +1(trunks)..-1(paths) and MTB_factor. E.g. if MTB factor is 2, a track has a factor -0.5, promotion of the tracks +2 time -0.5 = -1.0, so the track gets the costfactor decreased by 1.0.

  • MTB_factor be negative, reversing the effect, and can be combined with iswet_flag and smallpaved_factor.

  • Custom MTB_factor values can be used for the profile trimming to balance personal preferences toward main roads and MTB trails. Recommendations for custom MTB_factors are

    • Trekking profiles -0.5 - +1.0.
    • MTBlike profiles +1.0 - +2.5.
    • Fast profiles -0.5 - -1.5
    • As extreme can be used -1.5 - -2.0 as fastbike-like profile, or +2.5 - +3.0(MTB hardcore).
  • Warning MTB_factor 3.0 takes all MTB scales as equal, so it can kill you. In contrary to SAC hard limits of Hiking-profiles,
MTB scale hard limits for bike profiles are not yet implemented.

  • Trekking profiles with negative MTB_factor are fast but still trekking profiles. They are promoting main roads, penalizing unpaved roads, both gradually according to highway=* and surface related tags. They become comparable to fastbike profile for MTB factor <= -1.5.

  • The standard Fastbike, resp. fastbike-lowtraffic profile are more oriented to speed road bikes, being close to dedicated pedelec and velomobile profiles within Brouter-web profile list
