We’re happy to announce that an alpha version of Awami Nastaliq is now available for testing. This alpha includes bold weights that are not ready for production use, although you may find them useful already.

There are four weights in two font families:

  • Awami Nastaliq (Regular and Bold)
  • Awami Nastaliq Book (Regular and Bold) - a little heavier than the normal Regular and Bold

Providing Feedback

It would be useful if you could send us feedback as you discover issues (rather than sending all the feedback at the end), so that we can prioritise and begin work on these. Screenshots, annotated where necessary, are very useful to visualize reported issues. If you need a design change, it is also helpful if you can quantify that, e.g. “20% bigger” or “similar to the instroke of initial beh”, etc. A complete word or sequence is necessary to describe the context in which the problemative character occurs. We’re also interested in what worked well for you.

We really need people to install and use the font for about a month. We’d like you to test the fonts in the applications that you use for Arabic text. Testing in FLeX, InDesign, LibreOffice, Word, XeTeX, Paratext, Bloom, SAB, etc. would be especially welcome. Please include in your feedback the application version and OS version you used.

Note that the Regular font is called “Awami Nastaliq” so that installing it will overwrite your current font installation.

Testing

We’re particularly interested in feedback in the following areas:

  • Heaviness of bold weights
  • Shape of bold letters
  • Distance of marks and nuqta from character bases in bold
  • Size of the bold nuqta
  • Spacing for bold weights
  • Collisions that exist in bold but not in regular

Changes

  • Added Bold weight and Book and Book Bold versions
  • Changed the default value of the short forms feature to use all short forms
  • Flattened a couple of special ligatures
  • Changed dopesh to use 69 form consistently

Known Issues

  • Some new characters are needed.
  • Some letter sequences might need to be flattened.
  • Some custom abbreviations are needed.
  • The sequence بیچ may need improvement.
  • A few forms need to have their nuqtas adjusted.
  • We need to clarify the kerning rules for the full stop (period).
  • Diacritics (e.g., zer/kasra) under the final lam are too low.
  • Diacritics on the hamza might need improvement.
