Meeting notes

Standard Names

  • Reconsideration of “add four wind CF variables #73” (#77)
    • Old issue - related PR is merged
    • Michael K to close
  • What to do if there are two identical quantities from different schemes that need to be kept apart (#79)
    • Cheryl has been using “due_to” on CAM-SIMA side of things
    • Grant likes Matus’s suggestion
    • Cheryl - when do we use “from” vs “due to”
      • Grant - “due to” is process and “from” is a piece of code (but that’s just an instinct)
    • Dom - not at levels where high altitude levels - overlap with other variable
    • Jesse - are they triggering off of the same quantity?
      • Dom - guess is that they’re triggering off of different mechanisms
      • Grant - Maybe be more specific about the processes in the name instead of differentiating between pieces of code (will replace the vague “nonorographic”)
      • Grant - should update rules to explain differentiating between processes
  • Update rules to add _due_to_planetary_boundary_layer (vs. PBL?) (#80)
    • Dom - Will need to document the abbreviations we use in the rules
    • Michael K - use abbreviation and then spell out full name in the long name
  • Modify skin temperature at surface variables (#84)
    • Michael K to ping Steve Vahl to change “sea” to “ocean”
  • Add emissions names (#86)
    • Michael K offered some names to comply with our rules
    • PR author needs to modify XML
    • Dom - “emissions” vs “emission”?
    • Michael W - will this be a naming rabbit hole? Residential? Traffic? Etc?
      • Michael K - as long as they’re meaningful distinctions, seems ok
      • Michael K - will ask if they will eventually a need a solo “residential” and a solo “commercial” emissions stdname
    • Jesse - put emissions in its own section?

Discussion

  • Workflow discussion
    • People should take a look at Michael K’s document and offer suggestions on what we want to change
    • Will try the existing workflow of develop -> main and see if it “works” for everyone
  • UCAR SEA conference in April
    • Dom - would be nice to have someone present on framework stuff
    • Abstracts due in January
  • Michael K opening PR soon with standard name rules stuff we’ve been discussing!
