Configurations

Matt McCormack edited this page Jan 13, 2025 · 1 revision

In this menu you have the possibility to bring devices and platforms (also combined) into a temporal and spatial relationship.

Search configurations

You have the option to search for configurations. There is a search field in the upper part for free entry of search terms. Only configurations that are assigned to you (that you have created or that you are in the assigned project) are displayed. The search results are displayed in tabular form in the lower part of the page.

Extended search

In the Extended Search tab, you have the option for searching for specific attributes of the configurations. To do this, you can link search terms including a free text search. You also have the option of displaying also archived configurations via a checkbox.

Create new Configurations

To create a new configuration use the New Configuration-button at the top right corner and a new editing window will open. Here you have the opportunity to enter all relevant information about the configuration. In some fields you can select from defined entries. In this fields entries can be searched for by entering search terms directly into the field. Only when the Basic Data page has been correctly filled out and saved the other tabs can be filled.

Basic data

The basic parameters of the configuration are recorded in this field. There are fields that are mandatory and fields in which an entry is optional. In some fields, selection is required via a fixed selection list. Saving the entries must be confirmed with Create-button. After successful saving (message "Configuration created"), the other tabs of the configuration can be filled out.

Visibility (check box / mandatory)
  • internal: This device is visible for all users who are logged in. Only members of the assigned groups can edit it.
  • public: This device is visible for all users. Only members of the assigned groups can edit it.
Permission group (list / mandatory)

UFZ:

This group comes directly from the data project management module. All data projects available to you as a user are displayed here. If you do not have a choice, you must first create a data project or have it created by your responsible person.

GFZ:

The SMS is connected to the HIFIS Virtual Organizations, so you can add groups there. You can also expose groups from the myprofile page using the "External use" checkbox:

image

You can find it on Groups > Management > (Select a group) > "External use".

Label (free text / mandatory)

Give your configuration a label/name which is clearly describing your configuration.

status (list / optional)

Here you can select a status for your configuration that it has when the configuration is created. The current status is displayed as a tag in the overview of the configurations.

start date (datetime-field / optional)

Here you can specify a start date (date / time in UTC) of a configuration. This date can also be in the past or in the future.

end date (datetime-field / optional)

Here you can specify a end date (date / time in UTC) of a configuration. This date can also be in the past or in the future, but must be after the start date.

Project (free text / optional)

Here you can set the project for which the configuration is used.

Site / Lab (list / optional)

If the configuration is part of a larger site / laboratory, you can select an existing site entry here.

Description (free text / optional)

Here you have the option to store additional information about the configuration. Note: It is preferable to use the existing fields of the configuration.

Contacts

Contact persons (from the contact list) who can be assigned to the configuration can be created here. Roles can be assigned to these people. The selection is made from a list.

Platform and Devices

In this tab you have the possibility to mount and unmount devices and platforms. It means that you can bring devices and/or platforms into a specific thematic context (configuration label) for a specific period of time (configuration date) at a specific location (which can also be mobile). You can combine devices and platforms that you are allowed to manage.

An example: You are planning a ship campaign and the use of sensors to determine the water quality and abiotic air parameters. You have a vessel (as your vehicle), a water probe and a weather station with sensors for temperature and precipitation. You can now define the device of the underwater probe under the main platform ship/vessel and another platform (within vessel platform) of the weather station with the devices temperature probe and precipitation sensor.

configuration_mount_example

mount platform (and)or device

to mount a platform or a device click button mount platform or device.

unmount platform (and)or device

Switches into a mode to unmount devices.

Locations

Here it is possible to add or edit location information for the configuration.

It is possible to add two kind of locations:

Static Location

In case the configuration is mounted on the very same location for some longer time, this is the location type to use. You can enter coordinates or set the location as a point on a map.

Dynamic Location

If a configuration is mounted on a rover, or a vessel you can add a dynamic location. It is needed to have a device mounted on the configuration that can measure the current location - like a GPS unit that give us longitude, latitude & height. You have to select the measured quantities for the dynamic location.

No overlapping time periods with multiple locations are possible.

Parameters

You can add here additional settings for the configuration that are not covered by the platforms & devices parameters. Parameter values can be added in the "Actions" tab with "Parameter Value Change" actions.

Custom fields

Custom fields gives you the opportunity to define your own metadata that cannot be found in the basic data nor any other specific field of the configuration tabs.

You can define a name (key) and a value here by entering free text.

Attachments

Similar to devices & platforms it is possible to add links here or to upload documents like manuals, images of the device and so on.

Actions

Actions allow to create events that belong to the configuration.

The following actions can be created using the ADD ACTION button:

  • Configuration Maintenance
  • Configuration Observation
  • Configuration Visit
  • Manual Data Retrieval
  • Parameter Value Change

After the creation of actions, they are listed in chronological ordering.

Additionally to the actions that can be created on this page, it also lists mounts (can be edited in the Platforms and Devices tab) and location actions (via the Locations tab).

Clicking on one of the actions opens a panel with some more detail information.

TSM-Linkings

Here it is possible to link the measured quantities of the device mounts to data streams in time series management systems.

To add one you can click on the ADD TSM-LINKING button.

Please note that this is experimental in the current stage.
